The revised research plan is where you will describe how
you will occupy the niche you identified in the literature review. Spend
some time reviewing how the literature review sections transition into
methodology sections of the student research papers we have read this
term, and then decide on a method most appropriate for your topic. We
will talk extensively about the methods section of your paper in class
over the next few meetings.
The Task: Write a planning document that outlines the following:
1) Your research question: Write a paragraph describing your question
and how you arrived at that question. Remember, your question should have
changed since you first started your project. Use sources from your
literature review to describe your niche.
2) The data you plan to collect to answer the question--ie, who you plan to study.
3) How will you go about doing the research? Be as specific as possible
about the number of research subjects, how the research subjects will
be chosen, and what you will do (interview, survey, observation, focus
group, textual analysis, and so on).
1) Your research question: Write a paragraph describing your question and how you arrived at that question. Remember, your question should have changed since you first started your project. Use sources from your literature review to describe your niche.
ReplyDeleteResearch Question: How does the portrayal of African American woman in the media effect African American women? My topic focuses on the relation between how African American Women are portrayed in the media and how they perceive those images and how those images affect them personally. In the beginning of the semester my question was “What initiatives have succeeded in helping African American woman accept themselves and their culture?”. I looked in many different places and not much research was done on this topic. I changed my topic and found plenty of research has been conducted. Research articles such as the "Internalization of the Thin Ideal, Media Images and Body Image Dissatisfaction in African American College Women: Implications for Black Female Sexuality” focused on the amount of time exposed to the media in relation to “Body Image Dissatisfaction”. This is just one example that has given me a great foundation to build my research from.
2) The data you plan to collect to answer the question--ie, who you plan to study.
I would like to collect data from a large group of Black woman to get a realistic overview of how the media effects them if at all
3) How will you go about doing the research? Be as specific as possible about the number of research subjects, how the research subjects will be chosen, and what you will do (interview, survey, observation, focus group, textual analysis, and so on).
I want to conduct survey of a group of 100 Black woman around the UCF community,
I’m exploring what undergrad courses and endeavors prepare a prospective law student best for law school. The pre-law path has remained ambiguous for over a century. With no specific major required for law school entry prospective students have felt in the dark regarding what courses they should be taking during their undergrad years. For decades scholars have argued for various majors like English, Philosophy, Legal Studies, and Business, claiming that one major is superior to another. I plan to collect data primarily through textual analysis, and one on one interviews to determine what the best approach to law school is regarding coursework and extracurricular activities. I intend to interview as many law school alumni as possible, I’m hoping to find at least ten subjects for that research. Also, I’m exploring my options to survey law school students as, I’m not very familiar with any communities of law students so I’m still thinking of ways to accomplish that.
ReplyDeleteRevised Research Question
ReplyDeleteMy research question is, “How does unconscious bias play role in racism in the workplace?” I arrived to this question because automatically I knew I wanted to do something with racism as my topic, since it is such a controversial topic in today’s society. I am very passionate about fair rights for all, and I knew racism was becoming a bigger issue in politics. I took a deeper look and wanted to do it with the workplace because my dad works in Human resources for John Deere and him talking about the cases people bring to him about racism, and how he has to be very careful when hiring people. My original question was, “Why do certain job positions require a certain ethnicity or gender,” as you can see my question has a changed a lot over the course. Studying the topic of unconscious bias really changes my theories toward racism, as Ronald wheeler said, “Biases come in many forms and can influence all of our interactions, including those occurring in the workplace,” (Wheeler, 327).
In my research, I plan to interact with people individually and interview specific people to see their thoughts on unconscious racism. Then, I plan to mix in with the interviews to do a survey to get an overall look at unconscious racism in the workplace, vs a personal look at unconscious racism by the interviews. For the survey, I hope to send it to my friend’s dad who works in Human Resources for Pepsi, and to send out to their employees. Also, I plan on sending it out to the thousands of co-workers who my dad works with through e-mail. I hope to receive around 500 responses, out of the thousands who will be sent the email. On the interview side I hope interview around 6 people, with a variety of races, with higher business positions, or with years of experience. Therefore, I can get the best and closest way to tell how people feel.
My research question is “Does the NCAA and the schools associated with the organization have the finances necessary to pay their student-athletes after the NLRB ruling in 2017, as well as is this viewed as ethically appropriate to pay student-athletes?” My original question was “Should college athletes be paid and is it ethically appropriate to do so?” When I dove more into my research, I found myself looking more and more into statistics involving how much money each university and the NCAA was making off of college athletics and how they were doing it. So I decided that this would be my niche for my essay: the financial side of this debate and how schools and the NCAA go about it.
ReplyDeleteI plan to conduct a statistical and textual analysis using my sources and other statistics I found. I also plan to do a survey on a random sample of whether or not it is ethically appropriate to pay college athletes.
Avijit Ghosh’s research was most directly correlated to my topic, and he made the claim that NBA teams no longer rely on a physically dominant center. The roles of the big men have become more varied over time. My research question focuses on how increased preference for long distance scoring have contributed to this trend and people’s feelings towards the big man. The rest of my sources give me different angles ,in terms of basketball strategy and analysis, to approach the subject.
ReplyDeleteThe data I plan to collect stats of bigs before and after the implementation of the three point line and further focus on the past 6 years.
My main mode of research will be textual analysis. I will look at stats and trends in the NBA.
My topic has evolved slightly after the research that I have done and my research question is now more honed. I originally started out considering the environmental implications of electric vehicle technology; I soon realized that it would be very difficult to have any significant contribution to that conversation. My question then focused on the marketing of E.V. technology and how to effectively use it to have a substantial environmental impact. After doing more in depth research my revised research question is “What elements of electric vehicle marketing are effective in shaping consumer behaviors.” Through my research, I have found many articles that show “socio-demographics in themselves may not be a key explanatory variable” for the adoption of E.V. (Smith et al 300). This shows that there is another driving force behind the consumer behavior. The data that I would like to collect will focus on the major E.V. marketing campaigns and consider the successes and failures. Also, I will do research into the preferences / behaviors of college student consumers. I will conduct this research through observation and through focus groups / questionnaires.
ReplyDeleteMy research question has developed from “Do sports teams have an impact on a community economically and socially?” to “How does an NFL team have an economic impact on a community?”. I originally wanted to focuses on more of a social standpoint to football teams but as I’ve done the adequate research I’ve found myself more interested in the economic standpoint of the subject. I want to put together all the factors that go into a team’s economy and see how they have an effect on other communities.
ReplyDeleteThe source that I plan on using on addressing my topic is Frank Jozsa’s book National Football League strategies : business expansions, relocations, and mergers which I feel gives the most input to the conversation.
I plan to collect all the quantitative data that my sources have reported on and put them together to have a more concise conclusion on the topic. I plan to use a lot of my background knowledge of the NFL and football teams in order to have a well-constructed and informed piece combing both my own information and that from what I’ve collected through my research.
My research question: "How does happiness correlate with financial success?". My research is based on finding how people who are financially successful and vice versa show overall satisfaction with life. Also I intend to find how this varies between races, genders, culture and age.
ReplyDeleteI plan to collect data from people, such as gender, race, culture, age and economic along with levels of happiness. I also plan to collect insights from people as to how they define happiness and success.
To conduct this research i will be taking samples from UCF, My old high school and a mall in order to insure different age groups and asking them to complete a survey. I will consider using social media and other medium to conduct this research.
